Our story
Pushing Compton Project started in January 2025, but has been going on since 2022. The initiative started at Wilson Park for a skateboarding competition that brought in 300+ people, a drone, the NY times and the LA times, 2 buses, and a lot of hungry people! Both figuratively and physically. The event was created using a speaker from home, some monies to grill some burgers, and a small business called PCP.co donated some shirts. Genuinely did not expect the event to be such a success, the neighbors came across the street and told us that they were happy something was going on in Compton, the city does not get enough recognition as other communities. That's honestly what dawned on me at the moment; why don't more companies, individuals, non profits, xyz support the city of Compton? Enough of relying on the big dogs, we just had to make it into action. Pushing Compton Project was then started and has been able to give out 50+ skateboards at our first official event on Oct. 26, 2025. Fully funded by the City of Compton council members, non profit organizations, business partners, friends, and volunteers that made the event possible.
I was born and raised in Compton, California. I still get crazy looks when I mention the city I reside in. Nonetheless, that has not held me back from continuing to push forward in a city where we are not meant to beat the odds. Skateboarding changed my life for the better as a child and adolescent. It morphed my perspective of the world through a plank of wood and a turning device. I got to meet some of the most amazing people through this activity, and it has shown me the power of resilience and positive speaking. The amount of effort and time it takes to successfully land a skateboard trick after the countless hours, blood, sweat, and tears. Skateboarding has brought some of the most joyful moments in my life, as well as helped me through some of the darkest times of my life.
